They were in grade school when they first met, Masuda was seven and Tegoshi was six, Though they were a year different, they goes to the same class. Tegoshi wasn’t someone that could make friends on the first day of school, while Masuda made friends with nearly the whole class by the end of the day.
Masuda had always thought that Tegoshi and he might never be friends if it weren’t because their mothers are friends and they live in the same neighbourhood. But when he thought about it again, he knew that he was wrong. They would still be friends even if their mothers weren’t friends and they don’t live in the same neighbourhood. Not only that, even if they weren’t in the same class or school, Masuda was sure they would still somehow find each other. There was a red thread that connected them, he knew that from the first time they talk to each other. Somehow he knew that Tegoshi will be someone that will always be in the chapters of his life though he doesn’t knew how or why.
+++++
Their mothers introduced them to each other after the first day of school, Tegoshi looked at him nervously, stuttering out his name while trying to hide behind his mother. But when Masuda smiles brightly, his nervousness seems to diminish and he smiles back, a sweet smile that made Masuda blushed.
At that time, Masuda thought that Tegoshi was a girl and it was a few years later when he finally realized Tegoshi was a boy, thanks to Tegoshi mama who had come to her senses and starts dressing Tegoshi in shorts instead of skirts.
They became fast friends and was soon inseparable, wherever Masuda goes, Tegoshi was tagging along behind. And Masuda does not find it as something annoying or troublesome even when Tegoshi was clingy and self-centered.
On Tegoshi’s seventh birthday, Masuda broke his pink piggy bank and bought a sailormoon ring. He had watched on Television that boys gives rings to girls who they held hands with. Masuda did not know about love, but he often held Tegoshi’s hand. Besides, Tegoshi likes sailormoon.
They were on the walk back from school when Masuda gave the sailormoon ring.
“Happy birthday.” Masuda congratulated him and held out the ring.
Tegoshi took the ring and smiled as he slips it on his finger. “Thanks Massu!!!”
“Tesshi… will..will… “ Masuda frowns as he tried to remember what the actor said to the actress on the dorama he watched “will you… be my bride?”
Tegoshi blushed and nodded.
Masuda did not have the slightest idea what he was saying, but a warm feeling filled his heart and he smiled the brightest smile ever.
Somehow the rain gods above decided that it will be a good time to water the earth and droplets of water began to fall.
“It’s raining!!” Tegoshi said, looking up at the sky “Did you bring an umbrella?”
Masuda shook his head and Tegoshi sighs “I don’t bring one either…”
The rain started to fall heavily and the two little boys ran off to find shelter, they reached the park not long after and sheltered under a gazebo at the corner of the park.
“Massu,” Tegoshi tug at the older boy’s hand as he watched the rain “I’m happy that I’m going to be your bride”
Masuda blushed and attempted to say he was happy too, but what came out was a gurgle. And Tegoshi giggled at that.
“will you… be my bride?” When he said those words, Masuda never intended to remember it, he doesn’t even know what ‘bride’ means. But through the years, he remembers clearly those simple words he copied from the rectangular box, and so did Tegoshi.
Years passed, and came the day where they no longer spend their time playing on swings and sand pit, but in the shopping mall, game center and karaoke. The first time they went to karaoke, they found out that their voices harmonized very well and it made them addicted to it. Koyama, a good friend of them often teases them that they were platonically married when they sing. Masuda would laugh at it while Tegoshi blushed furiously.
They were young innocent boys who barely realized that they were in midst of puberty and that the world will always move in a way that things tend to change sooner or later. The only thing that they knew was that they were moving in the same pace, enjoying every minute of it and not wanting anything to change.
“Ne Massu, we will always be this way right?” Tegoshi asked him one day when they were sky watching at the river banks near their school.
Masuda turned to him, frowning.
“We will be together right? Massu will always be by my side, won’t you?” Tegoshi asked him again and Masuda could see in his eyes that Tegoshi was worried.
“Of course Tesshi, nothing will ever change.” Masuda answered him and smiled.
The same bright smile that made them friends years ago and now it does it’s magic again by washing the worries in Tegoshi, and made him smile.
But changes are one of those things in life that will happen, whether we wanted it or not. They are like bends in the road, some are sharp and made us realizes instantly that we have come to a different road. But there are also bends that are long and turns slowly, and it was only when everything around us changed and we couldn’t see the road where we came from, that we realized it.
For them, it was a mix of both. The first change that they really came to be aware of was when they stepped into senior high school. Just like the ugly duckling who turned into a beautiful swan, both Masuda and Tegoshi had grown from unattractive little boys into cute boys with blinding smiles. And when Masuda won the national junior swimming competition and Tegoshi saved the soccer team by contributing the last goal, love letters begin flooding their lockers.
“What do I do with these?” Masuda asked out loud as he stares at the pile of love letters in his locker, he can’t even find his bento which he put in this morning and it disturbed him.
“I don’t know…” Tegoshi muttered, staring at his own pile of love letters. Not that he doesn’t like it, but he can’t find his I-pod.
“You should take it home and read all of it.” Koyama suggested, smiling brightly. “They wrote these with all their hearts so it’s only pro-
“Don’t!” Shige, Koyama’s best friend cut him off then pointed at Koyama “He once slept at two in the morning reading love letters and end up with a migraine the next day.”
Masuda and Tegoshi’s eyes widened.
“You could just pile it up in your room.” Kusano, another good friend of them suggested.
“Or throw it away so the papers could be recycled.” Shige added.
Masuda and Tegoshi looked at each other wondering what’s best. “I know!” Masuda cried out excitedly and took the pile of love letters from his locker, only to give it to Shige who gape at him.
“I’ll just give these to you all since you are all more experienced with these and know what to do, thank you!!” Masuda smiled brightly at them.
Shige started to protest but Tegoshi had added his own pile of love letters onto shige’s hands. “You are so smart Massu!!” The younger boy looks at Masuda with glittering eyes.
“Let’s eat now, I’m hungry…” Masuda took the bento which he found at the bottom of his locker and walk out of the locker room along with Tegoshi who had found his I-pod.
“Do you like any of those girls?” Tegoshi asked him suddenly when they were finally on the rooftop eating lunch.
Masuda look up from his bento and shook his head as he munched the meatball in his mouth.
“Oh…”
“Fu.. Fhu?” Masuda asked him with his mouth still stuffed with meatball.
Tegoshi knitted his brows and look questioningly at him.
“Do you?” Masuda asked again, this time with no food in his mouth.
Tegoshi laughed and shook his head “No”
“Oh…”
Love letters soon became something that they get used to and saying no to the girls was getting easier everytime. Getting attentions like that made them happy but Masuda often wonders why doesn’t he had any interest in those girls. They were cute, nice, and they like him, so why doesn’t he feel anything towards anyone of them? Though in the future he knows the answer but it baffled him at that time.
Little changes often occurs around them and Masuda was aware of it, like the changes in Tegoshi’s clothing, Shige’s hair, Tegoshi getting bolder, Kusano moving to another town, Tegoshi’s sudden believe that he is god, KoyaShige became a couple, and Tegoshi getting clingy to other people other than him.
But it did not affect him, Masuda was happy by the way everything goes. The changes did not really affect his life, though Kusano’s sudden move did made him sad. But Tegoshi was still his best friend, Koyama and Shige were still his good friends, and Tegoshi and him still hangs out together nearly everyday.
He was contented. As long as everyone he loves was by his side and they were happy, there’s nothing he could complain about.
His feelings of contentment did not last long when Tegoshi suddenly got himself a girlfriend, and it happened because of him.
When Masuda look back years later, he realizes that was the time where His and Tegoshi’s life started to bend slowly in separate ways.

To Kei, I hope this is good enough ne... I know you requested for something lovey-dovey. But somehow my brains seem to be having other thoughts.
